SOCDS Census and American Community Survey Data.

This system provides Census data for metropolitan statistical areas, metropolitan cities and suburbs for Census and American Community Survey. The Decennial Census serves as the basis for 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000 data. The American Community Survey serves as the source for the American Community Survey data. Suburban data are calculated as the data for the metropolitan area less the sum of the data for all central/principal cities (if any) in the metropolitan area.

In addition, intercensal estimated poverty rate data are presented for 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, and 2003 in this system. Poverty rates estimates are provided for all central cities but only for incorporated suburban places during the intercensal years. Estimated population data for 2003 are also available.

Note that 2000 Census data released to date on employed residents by occupation are not directly comparable to data from previous Censuses.

The following table depicts the number of central/principal cities and suburban places contained in SOCDS. Metropolitan areas as defined in the 1990 OMB standard or the 2000 OMB standard, and the census places contained in these areas according to the 2000 census, serve as the basis for the collection of cities presented in SOCDS during all years.

SOCDS provides two options for selecting Census data based on the Office of Management and Budget's(OMB) definition of metropolitan areas; 1) the past 1990 Standard for Metropolitan Statistical Areas and Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs/PMSAs) as established in June 30, 1999 and 2) the present 2000 Standard including both Metropolitan and Micropolitan Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) as established in December 2006. In New England States, under the 1990 OMB standard option, you can choose whether metropolitan areas follow the standard MSA/PMSA definition, or the New England County Metropolitan Area (NECMA) definition.

ACS data is available only for CBSAs, principal cities and suburban places with populations of 65,000 or more. In cases where the ACS data do not cover all principal cities of a CBSA, aggregate suburb data are not computed. ACS data are not provided for 1999 MSA/PMSA/NECMA definition areas because data are not available for component parts of these areas with populations of less than 65,000.
