The Conversion of Rental Housing to Condominiums and Cooperatives: Volume of Conversion Activity in Selected Metropolitan Areas

This historic report is a follow-up of a previous HUD study that documented an increase in the rate of conversions of multifamily rental buildings to ownership buildings throughout the 1970s. This report presents detailed data on that phenomenon between 1970–1979 — during which 366,000 rental units were converted — as well as a discussion of the extent of conversion in the year 1980. Additionally, the publication describes conversion by select metropolitan area and identifies cities of concentration.
