Blacks Pay More for Less

This historic publication is a short-form introduction to a then-recent analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data that compared housing expense, overcrowding, and employment in low-income areas by race, ethnicity, and gender of head of household across 51 cities. The analysis found that, in families with a male head of household, black families paid a median $95 for housing and lived in crowded conditions 19% of the time, while white families paid a median $79 for housing and lived in crowded conditions only 9.5% of the time.
